Skyrail’s Loop Experience, Kuranda to Barron Falls.

During the upgrade works in 2026, Skyrail is running modified tours. This is the low down on the Loop Experience, a must do on your Kuranda day out.

Skyrail’s Kuranda to Barron Falls Loop provides unparalleled views of the ancient rainforest. No where else will you glide just metres over the treetops, before descending to the forest floor to explore more on Ranger guided tours. With the Caravonica to Red Peak component of the cableway closed for maintenance, the Loop is currently the only way to experience Skyrail and it’s big on inclusions.

The Loop takes you to and from Kuranda, over the Barron River and across the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest, with time at Barron Falls Station. You’ll glide above the rainforest canopy, explore Barron Falls Station, take in the views from The Edge Lookout, join a Ranger guided tour, discover the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, as well as stepping back in time at the Historical Precinct. 

Glide Above the Rainforest

The adventure starts at Skyrail’s Kuranda Terminal, where you board a six-person gondola bound for Barron Falls Station. Almost immediately you’re travelling over the Barron River, into a vast landscape of tropical rainforest. This is one of our favourite things about Skyrail. From above, you get a completely different perspective of the rainforest. Towering trees, climbing palms, vines and giant basket ferns merge into layer upon layer of green, with the mountains of Barron Gorge rising around you.

Explore Barron Falls Station

Barron Falls Station provides the opportunity to explore the forest floor on pathways and boardwalks. There are several lookouts providing views to Barron Gorge and Barron Falls. Make sure you step onto The Edge Lookout, which extends out over the gorge and provides panoramic views across this spectacular landscape. There’s plenty to see closer to the forest floor too. On our visit we spotted bright pink Powderpuff Lilly Pilly flowers, impressive fan palms, climbing Wait-a-While vines and countless other rainforest plants.

Meet the Skyrail Rangers

One of the highlights of The Loop is the complimentary Ranger guided tour at Barron Falls Station. This short guided experience brings the rainforest to life, with Skyrail’s Rangers sharing their knowledge of the plants, wildlife, history and ecology of the Wet Tropics. You can also spend time in the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, which has extensive interpretive signage displays providing additional information on the Wet Tropics.

Discover a Different Side of Barron Gorge

There’s human history here too. Barron Falls Station sits on the site of a former workers’ camp associated with the construction of the original Barron Falls hydro-electric scheme. Visit the Historical Precinct and you’ll find restored equipment and relics from this chapter of the Gorge’s history, including the Barron Gorge Personnel Trolley and Flying Fox. It adds another dimension to the experience, combining rainforest, scenery and local history in one stop.

What If It Rains?

We can answer this one from experience. It rained for most of our visit and we loved it. Cloud and mist drifted across the mountains and through the rainforest canopy, everything looked incredibly green and the wet leaves seemed to make the colours of the rainforest even more intense. So, if the forecast is looking a little grey, don’t change your plans. The rainforest in the rain has an atmosphere all of its own and complimentary umbrellas are available for your use at Barron Falls Station.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway – Loop Experience, The Facts

• The Loop operates from Kuranda between 19 August and 25 October 2026 while major upgrade works are being completed on other sections of the Skyrail cableway.
• It runs Wednesday to Sunday, with boarding available between 10am and 3.30pm.
• Allow 1 hour for the Kuranda to Barron Falls Loop, which makes it easy to incorporate into a day exploring Kuranda.
• Allow time before or afterwards to wander through the village, visit the markets and attractions, grab some lunch or explore some of Kuranda’s rainforest and riverside walking trails.
